The short answer
Younger than most people think. Trials from 4, motocross from 5 and karting from 6. Car racing on circuits starts at 14, road-car drag racing at 18. In karting, under-18s also need a parent or guardian to hold an entrant licence.

Licence: ACU Trials Registration
ACU: trials welcomes riders from four years old on electric bikes. AMCA: ages 4–6 electric or cycle trials only (max 2bhp), 6–9 up to 80cc, 10–12 up to 125cc, 13–15 up to 250cc; the AMCA's general minimum for trials is 6. Minimum ages for car trials drivers were not stated on the Motorsport UK pages checked.

ACU: riders can compete in the 50cc Automatic class from their 5th birthday (from 1 January 2026). ACU youth bands are 5–8 for 50cc autos, 7–11 for 65cc, 9–12 for 85cc small wheels, 11–14 for 85cc big wheels, with adult licences from 15 on 125cc and up. AMCA: accepts motocross riders from 7.

Motorsport UK says competitive racing can start from the 6th birthday in the Bambino class. ARKS says youngsters from age 6 can take the ARKS test and race. Motorsport UK's licence page lists Kart Clubman as 6+ and Kart Inter Club as 8+.

Licence: NASA Competition Licence
NASA issues Junior Competition Licences from 10 to under 16, with parental consent; no one under 10 can hold a licence. Juniors race Class 1, Class 1A and Junior Specials, and from 14 may also race Formula 600. From 16 to 18 a full licence can be issued with written consent.

AMCA accepts enduro riders from 11. Under the ACU, time card enduros have a minimum age of 16, with younger riders eligible for other enduro formats; the ACU's 2023 enduro regulations also list a Youth Time Card Enduro class for ages 14–18 on machines up to 125cc.

Junior oval formulas: Spedeworth Junior Bangers from the 11th birthday to the day before the 16th; ORCi Ministox also from 11. Senior ORCi formulas: minimum 16. Speedway youth age bands for 2026 could not be verified on a current official page.

Road rally navigators can start at 12, and road rally drivers must be at least 17. Stage rally co-drivers can start at 14 on single-venue events and 16 on multi-venue events. The RS Inter Club Stage Rally driver licence is listed as 14+ with the BARS test.

Licence: ACU Novice licence
The ACU's 2025 Road Racing Standing Regulations list 13 as the youngest age for a solo Novice, Clubman or National licence, restricted to small machines (for example up to 125cc production-based bikes, up to 305cc single or twin four-strokes, 125cc automatic scooters). Capacity limits rise at 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18. Riders under 18 must be accompanied to every meeting by a parent or legal guardian.

Motorsport UK: general rallycross competition from 16, Junior Rallycross from 14; the Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship (1.3-litre Swifts) is for drivers aged 14–16. The RS Inter Club licence is listed as 14+. Swift test and coaching days have welcomed juniors from 12 for practice.

Drift Matsuri requires drivers to be at least 16. Driftland and Teesside practice days require a full UK driving licence (Driftland: a manual licence), or an alternative route set by the venue.

Santa Pod RWYB says drivers must be at least 18, but under-18s with a valid licence may take part if a parent or guardian countersigns a declaration. For racing, the SPRC guide (2020) says Junior Dragster starts at 8 and adult drag race classes at 16.
